To me 'Lunacy - Moon on Wax' highlighted how refreshing it is to go
to an alternately produced night. The vibe was buzzing from the start,
from the crowd to the djs, percussionists and performers - everyone
seemed to be letting their hair down at 'Lunacy'.
So let me backtrack a sec and tell you about my night. Well we didn't
know what to expect as we bopped along the Harbour Bridge from SOS to
the 'Gaelic Club', Surry Hills. We were amped for a long weekend bender,
and arriving to hear the second half of 'Woodsy's' set (aka UK bred Lee Woods)
put us straight in the mood. The venue, being normally a band venue, really
created a performance-like atmosphere with 'Morph and Spook' pumping out
heaps of contorted images and video clips, projected onto a massive backdrop
for the stage.
Right from the moment we arrived, the crowd was up grooving, and besides
some technical sound problems, that were quickly sorted out, Woodsy did a
fine job of churning out the sexy vocals tracks one after another. Following
was Mark Dynamix. Mark has consistently pleased me every time I've seen him
live, and at 'Lunacy' was no exception.
Will Styles took to the decks after a lively bongo interlude by 'Morialto'.
Morialto sounded a little out of sync with the music at the beginning of
the night but proved to be crowd pleasers with their tribal costumes and
a surprise bongo ambush by Craig in the middle of the dance floor. Coming
back to Will, I have enjoyed his sets of late at SOS and the Globe, and
at 'Lunacy' he was dishing out his good time energy making it just plain
difficult to leave the breakin' dance floor.
The highlight of the evening for me was seeing Craig Obey and The Jackal
scratching it up on four decks and just having a darn good jam with each other.
Their enthusiasm really rubbed off on the crowd and it wasn’t long before
people jumped on stage to match their chunky set with some chunk it up moves.
The dance floor was pumping when they dropped 'Purple Haze', and I loved the
videocam effect over the top of the decks. The camera certainly had its work
cut out for it, trying to chase Matt and Craig's hands around the decks! Cheesy
re-mixes and silly samples, not to mention 'Work It' by 'Missy Elliot' - these
boys always know how to have fun!
Not knowing a lot about the harder side of house, I enjoyed the guest appearance
of Vicky Devine from Ibiza and Kashika (aka Leasa de Klerk), who injected pure
adrenaline into those left with legs. Both girls were having a pretty good groove
themselves behind the decks, and I'd wished I hadn't worn heels, as I was jumping
pretty high with a number of other nutters at that stage of the evening. Although
not everyone’s style of music, it was great to see two chicks up there adding even
more variety to the night. Kashika landed us back to earth in her own driving style,
one of my favourites being 'Age of Love'.
I will be interested to see if the Lunacy crew hold another party again between
some pretty competitive events, namely the Big Day Out and Vibes. In short, there
could have been a better turnout, although the general consensus was that a great
night was had by all, and it was obvious that the promoters get a buzz out of putting
on parties.
So, I definitely received the weekend fix I expected - aural pleasure, a good dance,
great atmosphere and quality people. It’s great to see more parties and events being
held in Sydney over the last few years in particular, and I think us punters should
keep on getting out there and trying something new. I certainly thought it was worth
it. I felt like I'd been to one big friendly house party, and I'd like to see more
'Lunacy' events in Sydney in the not too distant future.
